![]() Because of its size, Busan, the nation's best-known port, is considered Korea's second capital. An international metropolis of 4 million, Busan is the host city of the 2002 FIFA World CupTM and the 14th Asian Games in 2002. The city boasts a deep port with minimal tidal differentials. Due to its geographical advantage and modern port facilities, Busan Port ranks third in the world in terms of the quantity of goods transported in and out. Every summer, Busan swarms with vacationers from all over the country who visit Gwangalli and Haeundae Beaches, located near the downtown area. A total of 64 matches will be held throughout Korea and Japan, 32 in each country. In the first round, 32 teams are divided into 4 groups and each group has 8 teams. The teams compete on a round-robin basis, and the top two seeds of each group advance to the Round of 16. Matches from the round of 16 to the final match will be completed on a knock-out basis. In addition, the Buddha statues within the temple and splendid art works displayed in the temple museum add to the great value of Tongdosa. Chungryeolsa (memorial building) Chungryeolsa was constructed in 1650 in honor of Song Sang-heon, a magistrate of Busan, who sacrificed his life defending the nation. Also, 88 memorial tablets of the fallen are preserved here. Haeundae Beach Boasting a 2 km-long stretch of white sand beach, Haeundae is surrounded by cherry trees and pine forests. The moonlight that harmonizes with the night view of the sea creates a spectacular scene, attracting visitors all year round ¢ºFestivals & Events The 14th Asian Games in 2002 Between September 29 and October 14, at ten stadiums and sports facilities in the vicinityBusan International Film Festival Every October, at the Busan Exhibition & Convention Center (Haeundae Yacht Stadium) and the Cinema Zone in Nampo-dong. During the festival 210 films produced in 60-odd countries, including documentary films and short animations, are screened. In addition, various events are held, such as hand printing of film celebrities and seminar sessions between the viewers and directors. Busan Sea Festival Early August each year around Busan's six beaches, including Haeundae. The festival features parades on the beach, citizen-participation events and water sports, among others.
