![]() Suwon is located in the mid-southern area of Gyeonggi Province situated in the central area of the Republic of Korea. It is Korea's first planned city, originally developed by King Jeongjo during the Joseon Dynasty in the 18th century. King Jeongjo wanted to move the royal court from Seoul to Suwon to be closer to the tomb of his father, Prince Janghyeon, thereby expressing his filial piety, and also to carry out political reforms. To this end, he built the Hwaseong Fortress and relocated a large number of residents to the vicinity of the area, thus creating a city. Hwaseong Fortress is highly praised by UNESCO World Heritage Committee as one of the most outstanding examples of military architecture built in the 18th century. Suwon is also well-known for its wide variety of festivals and plentiful tourist attractions as well as its fine cuisine such as Suwon galbi (broiled short-ribs). ![]() Name: Suwon World Cup Stadium Location: Uman-dong, Paldal-gu, Suwon Capacity: 43,138 seats (football-only stadium) Completion date: May 13, 2001 Features Joint construction of Korea's Samwoo Construction Co. and the French construction company that built Saint-Denis Stadium in France. Unique wing-shaped roof ¢ºTourist Attractions Hwaseong (fortress) It is the most prominent and most perfect fortress constructed during the Joseon Dynasty, combining the advantages of stone and mud fortresses. Registered on the list of UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage in 1997, it has earned a reputation as one of the most scientifically designed fortresses in the world. Yongjusa (temple) King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty built the temple to pacify the soul of his father, Prince Janghyeon. Invaluable cultural assets in the temple include a bronze bell of the Goryeo Dynasty (AD.918~1392) and an altar portrait of Buddha painted by Kim Hong-do, one of the greatest painters of the period. Everland Amusement Park Everland is the 7th largest theme park in the world. It consists of a zoo, Festival World featuring snow sledding facilities, Caribbean Bay, the largest four-season water park, Speed Way featuring auto racing, and Four Seasons Garden, which presents a seasonal flower festival. Korean Folk Village Korean Folk Village recreates various cultural themes from the late Joseon Dynasty, including traditional regional Korean houses, government buildings, marketplaces, watermills and brassware workshops, all completely staffed by actors and artisans in full costume. It provides visitors a glimps of the traditional lifestyle of the Korean people of that era. The village is often used as the setting for historical TV dramas, serving as a multi-purpose cultural site. Woncheon Amusement Park The amusement park full of natural resources houses two parks and a lush forest. Under construction are recreational facilities, including a campsite, training facilities designed to strengthen both the body and the mind, and cable car facilities. ¢ºFestivals & Events The Reenactment of Martial Arts during the reign of King Jeongjo Early June every year at Yeonmudae. Major events include taekgyeon (traditional weaponless martial arts) demonstration, traditional honor guards's military marches, and a traditional fencing demonstration Suwon Hwaseong International Drama Festival Early June every year at Hwaseong. Theatrical performances by artists from several foreign countries are presented. Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival Early October every year, across Suwon. Major events include lotus lamp parade, fireworks, variety of art performances by genre and citizens'sathletic contest. Suwon Galbi Festival From late May to early June every year, at Manseok Park. Major events include a galbi (beef rib) cooking contest and traditional Korean art performances. ¢ºFood Suwon galbi: One of the most famous Suwon delicacies.
